NYX Butter Lipsticks

I am so excited to share this review with you all. Recently, NYX came out with a new line of lipsticks called Butter Lipsticks. There are currently 22 shades and I picked up 7 of them. The packaging is really cutesy; it matches the lipstick shade in the tube.

According to NYX Cosmetics, these lipsticks are suppose to melt on your lips and give full yet lightweight coverage. I totally agree. These lipsticks went on very smooth and felt very light on my lips. These lipsticks are also very fragile, so try to apply them with a light hand. As you can see in the pic below, one of my lipsticks fell apart because it was so soft. I only swiped my lips twice lightly before this happened.

The swatches!

NYX Candy Buttons – A pretty peachy, pink shade. This shade would make a nice nude for someone with a lighter complexion. I would pair this with a light brown lipliner such as NYX Nude Truffle.

NYX Fizzles – A rose pink. I think this shade would be a great go-to everyday color for the spring. You can just swipe it and go.

NYX Mary Janes – A true red. I have really been feeling red lipsticks lately. This one was suppose to be my favorite of the butter lipstick collection, but it turned out to be the most disappointing. This was the lipstick that fell apart after I swatched. It was like it began to melt as soon as it touched my lips.

NYX Little Suzies – A deep pink with yellow undertones. This shade is a touch darker than NYX Fizzies, but very similar so if you pick up one, you don’t need the other (unless you’re a makeup junkie like me lol).

NYX Razzle – A bright fuschia. This lipstick ended up being my favorite out of the bunch. It’s such a pretty shade and it’s one of those shades where you don’t need a liner. Just put it on and go on about your day.

NYX Pops – A mauve shade. Pops is a pink nude that is just a natural gorgeous color. This is my MLBB (My Lips But Better) shade. I’ll definitely get lots of use out of this one. Pops is very similar to MAC’s Hug Me, but Pops is more opaque.

nyxpops1 nyxppos2

NYX Hunk – A blue violet. Hunk is a berry purple color. I think this is a great lipstick shade that will take you into the fall/winter seasons.

nyxhunk nyxhunk2

I hope you found this review helpful. These are my very first NYX lipsticks and I’m loving them so far. I plan on trying their matte lipstick next. You can find these butter lipsticks and more NYX products at Ulta and NYX Cosmetics online and they retail for $5.99.

Do you have any of the NYX Butter Lipsticks? Let me know how you like them!

Milani Coming Up Roses Blush Review

Milani describes this product as a luxurious matte powder blush that features rose petals micro-milled into the powder to bring out the natural rosy tones. This blush is multi-purpose: use to shape, contour, and highlight your face. It is easy to use and streak-free. Suitable for all skin types and tones.

I decided to order these blushes after I missed the ones that were released last year. They were so hard to find and the swatches were so very pretty. When I heard new shades were being released this year, I immediately headed over to milani’s website and ordered all of them (mostly because shipping is free when you spend $30.00 or more).

I am disappointed in these blushes because they are VERY chalky. They felt very rough when I swatched them on my skin. The packaging is beautiful and I love the rose design, but that’s about it. The colors are pretty when applied, but I just can’t get over that chalky feeling. They weren’t comfortable on my skin at all.

These blushes are limited edition and retail for $7.99. They are avaliable now on Milani’s website and will be released in select Walgreens stores this month.

Milani Coral Love – A bright coral matte.

Milani Lady Rouge – A hot red matte.

Milani Love Potion – A dark rose matte.

Milani Tea Rose – A light rose matte.

If you really want these, I suggest you purchase them online, because otherwise you’ll most likely have to search high and low to find these in stores.

If you pick up any of these blushes, let me know how you like them!

5 Red Lipsticks for Valentines Day

I apologize for posting this so late in the week, but I’ve been dealing with the stomach flu since Monday, so I’ve spent most of this week in bed. Last week I shared with you my top 5 lipsticks for Valentine’s Day. Well today I’m pulling out my favorite red lipsticks for Valentine’s Day. Red is one of those classic lipstick colors that looks great on anyone, you just have to find the right hue for you.

1. MAC RiRi Woo (Limited Edition) Mac Cosmetics; $15.00

RiRi Woo was the first lipstick Rihanna released from her RiRi Hearts MAC collection. It’s a nice blue based red lipstick with a retro matte finish. If you missed out on this one, MAC’s Ruby Woo is extremely similar. The undertones are a tad bit different. This is a nice true red lipstick.

2. Viva Glam Rihanna, MAC Cosmetics; $16.00

I reviewed this lipstick a few weeks ago. It’s a lovely red lipstick with gold frost. This shade looks great on all skin tones.

3. Wet n Wild Spotlight Red, CVS and Walgreens; $1.99

Wet n Wild has some amazing lipstick shades for a great price and this is one of them. Spotlight Red is supposed to be a matte finish, but as you can see on the picture, it’s more glossy than matte. I still love it. It lasted on my lips for 5 hours, so it has some staying power.

4. Wet n Wild Cherry Picking, CVS and Walgreens; $1.99

Another lovely Wet n Wild shade. Cherry Picking is more of a pinky-red. Very pretty on the lips. The only downside of Wet n Wild lipsticks is that dreaded packaging.

5. NYX Perfect Red, Ulta; $5.99

I picked up Perfect Red this weekend. It’s my very first NYX lipstick. I don’t know what took me so long because I just LOVE the way this feels on my lips. Perfect Red is a matte finish, but it’s not drying at all. Definitely add this to your red lipstick collection.

So these are my red lipstick picks for Valentine’s Day. Let me know if you wear any of these!

MAC A Fantasy of Flowers Lipstick + Creamsheen Swatches

MAC’s big spring collection was released online January 30th. MAC was secretive with this collection. We didn’t see many early swatches, only that Stereo Rose and Perfect Topping Mineralized Skinfinishes were being re-promoted. So, I found one set of swatches from Specktra and ordered based on those swatches. Here is what I ordered:

Rose Bud lipstick

Snapdragon Lipstick

Fleur d’Coral lipstick

All of the lipsticks in the collection have a Lustre finish. They are extremely sheer and it took about 10 swipes on the lips for these lipsticks to shoe up on my pigmented lips. Not sure how I feel about these lipsticks. It took too much to get them to work.

Flare for Fantasy Creamsheen Lipglass

Nectarsweet Creamsheen lipglass

These Creamsheens applied smoothly and I had no issues with these at all. I almost thought they were Dazzleglasses because of all the glitter. I’m not complaining though. I love glitter (who doesn’t?)

I’m a little disappointed in this collection. There was nothing that wowed me. There was all this secrecy surrounding the collection that kept my interest, then after I got my goodies it was like womp, womp.

A Fantasy of Flowers launches in MAC stores on February 6th, but you can still find items in this collection on MAC Cosmetics, Macy’s and Nordstroms websites.

Are you planning on getting anything from A Fantasy of Flowers collection?

5 Pink Lipsticks for Valentine’s Day

Hi! I’m so excited that February is here! It’s a short month at work (yay!) with a winter break for the students (double yay!) and it’s also the month of love. Valentine’s Day is one of my favorite holidays. I get to dress up and have a date night with the hubby, something we barely get to do anymore. I’m still thinking about outfit choices and makeup looks, so I decided to show you my top 5 favorite pink lipsticks for V-day.

1. MAC Candy Yum Yum; Mac Cosmetics, $16.00

Candy Yum Yum is an extremely popular color. It’s a bright, neon pink. It is gorgeous on all skin tones. I would wear it like this, but a liner such as MAC Magenta, NYX Purple Rain or NYX Fuschia would look nice with this lipstick. It has a matte finish.

2. Wet n Wild’s Penthouse Sweet (Fergie Centerstage collection) $3.49; Walgreens and CVS stores.

Penthouse Sweet is a nice blue based pink. It’s not too bright, but it’s not a toned down pink either. You only need about two swipes on the lips as this lipstick is very pigmented. It goes on really smooth as well.

3. Maybelline Pink Pop; Walgreens, $7.49

pinks1This is a really pretty pastel pink. You can apply this sheer, or you can build it up to your liking. I swiped this about three times so you can see the true color of this lipstick, but I would swipe this across my lips once just to give my lips a nice soft shade of pink. The liners I’ve used with this lipstick are MAC Magenta, NYX Purple Rain, NYX Brown Cafe’, and NYX Fuschia.

4. NYC Blue Rose; Rite Aid, $1.99

If you’re not feeling the light or bright pinks, how about a fuschia lip? Blue Rose is a fuschia shade with an iridescent finish. It is a great dupe for MAC’s Show Orchid. I’m so in love with this color. I don’t wear it often, but I get compliments on it every time I wear it. It’s also really affordable, so I would definitely reccomend this beautiful shade for your lipstick collection.

5. Wet n Wild’s Fuschianista (Fergie Centerstage collection); Walgreens and CVS stores

Now this is one of those lipstick colors I dream about. Fuschianista is a deep fuschia color. It is very pigmented, so you only need to swipe your lips once or twice to get this look. I swear these Fergie lipsticks are some of the best drug store lipsticks I’ve ever seen. They last a long time on the lips also. This lipsticks leaves a stain on your lips almost immediately though, so you need to work quickly with this one.

Be sure to let me know what are your favorite pinks for Valentine’s Day! I would love to try out more pink lipsticks.

Heatless Curls – Flexi Rod Set

I wanted to play in my hair this week. On wash day, I was tempted to try out a wash and go, but my hair is not curly towards the front, so that was out of the question. As I was looking for some oil to seal my hair with, I found these!

I almost forgot I had these babies! Last time I used them was sometime last summer. Time for a flexi rod set!

I just love having perfect curls without the heat. This is also a great style to use when transitioning from relaxed to natural.

Products Used: Red flexi rods (About 30), Argan Oil, Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie, Olive Oil Eco Styler Gel.

I did this look on damp hair and it took about 1 1/2 hours to set the curls. I used small sections and made sure to smooth the product through each section. I only used I little bit of product. I didn’t want hard, crunchy curls. I let the curls air dry overnight. I just put a satin bonnet over the flexi rods and went to sleep. These things are not the easiest things to sleep in.

I loved the way they turned out. Hopefully I can get this set to last for five days. I’m planning on maintain this style by using the pineapple method at night, then fluffing out my curls with oil in the morning.

Viva Glam Rihanna Lipstick + Lipglass

vgr7(Pic credit: MAC Cosmetics)

The partnership between MAC and Rihanna continues. Viva Glam Rihanna was released online on 1/21 and in stores on 1/23. I went on the MAC website at 11:55 and got instantly upset because I was put in the dreaded waiting room (if you bought the RiRi collections online, then you should know what a PITA they are). I was only in the waiting room for literally a minute then I was able to snatch up my goodies and check out quickly. Good job, MAC. All of the RiRi launches should’ve gone this smoothly.

Before I get into the swatches, can we talk about this gorgeous packaging?!

The tube and lipglass have been frosted out to this beautiful crimson color. It has nice feel to it as well. It reminds me of the packaging from the Temperature Rising collection that was released last summer.

Viva Glam Rihanna is a blue based red Frost lipstick.  It applies evenly and feels very comfortable on the lips. It is such a beautiful shade of red. It’s my favorite red lipstick at the moment. Definitely back-up worthy. If I could, I would wear it everyday.

Viva Glam Rihanna lipglass is even more beautiful than the lipstick. It has so much shimmer! So if you’re a glitter fan, this one’s for you. It has the same consistency of a normal MAC lipglass, and is just as tacky on the lips as the rest. I personally like the tackiness of the lipglass because it lasts longer than other brands of lipgloss I own.  Let me give you a swatch:

Viva Glam Rihanna lipstick on top, Viva Glam lipglass on the bottom.

These beauties are still available on MAC Cosmetics online, and even though these are limited edition items, they will be available all year. The lipstick retails for $16.00 and the lipglass is $15.00. All the proceeds of Viva Glam Rihanna (and all other Viva Glam lipsticks and lipglasses) go towards helping women, men and children living with and affected with HIV/AIDS. What a great cause!

If you pick up Viva Glam Rihanna, let me know how you like it!

L.A. Girl Pro Conceal HD

Hey lovies!

I want to share this beauty gem with you. I’m so excited about it too! So, I first saw  these on Youtube from a few beauty vloggers and most claimed that these concealers were comparable to MAC Prolongwear Concealers. I wanted to find out for myself, so I found a few colors at a beauty supply store and snatched them up.

Let me tell you….these are the BOMB! A little definitely goes a long way, so you don’t have to use a lot. Right now I only use them for a under eye highlight and this product works really well. It also comes with a little brush attached so it makes the product very easy to apply.

Here’s a few swatches:

Medium Beige, Almond

Toffee, Fawn

lagirl3Beautiful Bronze, Toast

Currently, I’m using fluctuating between Almond and Toffee for my highlight color. Toffee gives me more a nice, natural daytime look and Almond it a little more dramatic for a night time look.

I would definitely pick these over the MAC Prolongwear concealers because of the price and the quality. When you apply the LA Girl concealers, they stay put. They don’t move and they stay on all day.

It took me about a month to find these at a beauty supply store in my area, so I hope you can find them locally as well, but if you can’t, you can pick them up at ikatehouse.com and cherryculture.com

Have you tried these L.A. Girl Pro Conceal concealers yet? Tell me how you like them!

Quick and Easy Protective Style – The Twisted Bun

Hello there and happy Monday!

So, this is my second week of protective styling and I’m enjoying it so far. I’m trying out different styles and my hair is getting a break from heat. This week I cowashed with Hello Hydration conditioner, then deep conditioned with V05 Moisture Milk (I added coconut oil, and wild growth oil), then detangled with Kinky Curly Knot Today (which is AMAZING, by the way!). So after I did all that, I realized that I had no idea how I was going to style my hair. I mean nothing was coming to mind. Then I remembered that I had an extra pack of kanekalon braiding hair left over from some twists I had last summer and decided to do a high twisted bun.

This was my first time doing this style and I think I did ok. Next time, however, I think I’ll use two packs of hair instead of one. Hopefully this style can last all week. It only took about 15 minutes to complete. I’m loving it so far.

What styles are you wearing to protect your hair this winter season? I’d love to hear from you!

Restarting my Healthy Hair Journey

Happy New Year everybody! With the new year comes resolutions. I have a list of about 10 things, but I’m only going to blog about three, maybe four of them. So one of the main things I want to accomplish this year is thick, healthy hair. I started my HHJ (healthy, hair, journey) back in ’09 after I got my last relaxer. I was tired of having short, fried hair. I knew nothing about being natural or doing a big chop, so I transitioned for 36 months. I became fully natural on July 17, 2012. Here are a few pics at the start of my journey:

 photo IMAG0102.jpg          photo IMAG0101-1.jpg

Before, my focus was only on growth. I wasn’t thinking about healthy hair, what works, what doesn’t; I just wanted it long. And it grew to about BSL, then I got too comfortable and started neglected my hair.

I decided to color my hair in 2011, then added blonde highlights in 2012. Worst decision I’ve ever made regarding my hair. The color broke off my hair so badly. Now I have color damage and it’s causing horrible breakage. So, currently I’m in the process of transitioning from this color damage. I really don’t want to a drastic cut. I’ve been cutting off little by little. I think I had three trims in 2013 (and that’s a LOT because I hate getting trims). Here’s my hair in it’s current state:

And here’s a pic of the back. You can see the damage and the thin ends *cringe*.

I’m still trying to figure out my hair, what makes it happy and what it needs. The first thing I’m going to try to do is eliminate heat. I know heat is not helping my hair at all, and as I was doing my hair this time, I was cringing with every pass of the flat iron. I also need to learn how to protective style my hair without sew-ins and braids. These never help my hair and I always experience set backs.

So as I said earlier, my goal is to have thick, healthy natural hair. Hopefully I can stick to this without getting frustrated. Wish me luck, ok?

Do you have any new year resolutions? I’d love to hear about it.

Thanks so much for reading.
